| This is a reflection on many avenues of thought and how the ol' social worker percieves their role in our society. | |||||

Social Services, how do they view themselves, well if you believed some of the sites I have viewed, it is between sainthood and godhood that many social workers perceive themselves. One global theme though is they believe they are better certainly not equal in any sense. From BASW... "Social Workers are
highly qualified and make key recommendations about where people may be
detained or live – the working environment should permit them to
make the best decisions in the interest of the people with whom they work.
" This piece I found on BASW and sorry but I couldn't stop laughing, does the author live in the real world or is he ToyTowns social worker or something.... "The internationally agreed definition of social work highlights working with people to achieve positive change in the context of their families and communities. It is a human rights discipline where the importance of the individual is a key part of our code of ethics. We work with people in crisis and conflict over a period of time helping them turn negative issues into positive outcomes. The core social work services with child protection, mental health, working with vulnerable people of all ages are complex and have suffered over many years from a lack of investment and much criticism. This is an opportune time to revisit what it is we do on behalf of society that other professions do not do and to fit social workers for the tasks ahead, helping them to help and protect others. BASW would suggest that the review group would be greatly aided by including a frontline social worker who understands the day to day demands of the core services. " The fluffy prose above does not equate once with any social worker I have met nor the service I have received, the BASW exhibit an amateurish approach to a volatile field. And what else can you say when you see what they have to deal with every day, hostile families, exposed to potential abused children everyday, bad press and a draconian work ethic where you hide behind the closed ranks or the management and the Union will get you. I think many of them have slowly and exorably gone round the bend and are suffering mental illness, especially some of the people at BASW. Yet not one social work site run by social workers addresses the failings of child protection, they do not admit any failings, to them there is nothing wrong....! Just reread the passage above if not sure... They say at BASW that all complaints are maliciously bound, this blind generalisation is riduculous in the extreme and seeing some of the sites always puts me in mind of Nero fiddling while Rome burned. I submitted a response to their call that all complaints are maliciously bound and against their "fariness" principle they failed to post my response, sound familiar anyone...? Social Services do not see themselves as a benign organisation mediating family disputes and working to adminstrate a family recovery, they now view themselves as a force, as people, distasteful as it may be, performing a necessary evil. My how they have grown and that is purely the governments fault for when ever there is social crisis the government has failed to act and thrust it squarely at social services, when social services fail to deal with it, they are given powers to make it work and this has been happening since the fifties and now the UK has a monster on its hands and its members can't see for themselves what actual harm they are doing. There are good social workers out there, they are becoming an endangered species and social workers could given the right support and conditions do so much for us, but whilst social workers perceive themselves above society and above the law and answerable to no-one then all they can do is damage and hurt in most cases.
